Rabbit Damage: What to do next

Now that you know how to spot rabbit damage, learn from the pros at Landscape Garden Centers to find out if your plant can be saved and how to set it up for new growth. Got questions? We can help! Stop in at LGC at talk to the experts today!

A few weeks ago, Landscape Garden Centers’ experts showed you how to spot rabbit damage on your plants and trees. Join us as we talk about how to rescue your rabbit damaged plants (if possible). Now that you’ve identified the areas damaged by the rabbits, here’s what to do next.

  1. If the majority of the plant still looks undamaged, but you have some areas to prune
back, take your pruner and cut the damaged branches off at an angle.

  2. Be sure to cut back to the next node on the branch to encourage new growth.

  3. If the entire plant has been damaged, you can either wait to see how it comes back for
the next couple of seasons, or go ahead and cut back/remove all of the dead and see if
    any new growth happens.

  4. If it is a woody plant, you may need a saw to cut the branches.

  5. If there is no salvaging the plant that has been eaten, stop in and we can help you pick out a new plant

  6. We will even install the new plant and remove the dead one as an additional service.

How to Plant a Tree: Step-By-Step Guide

Need to replace a tree or looking to plant one for the first time? Follow along as the pros at Landscape Garden Centers in Sioux Falls, SD show you everything you need to know for a successful tree planting!

If you’re looking to plant a tree to replace one damaged by weather or rabbits, Landscape Garden Centers is here to help walk you through the tree planting process. The best time to plant a tree in Sioux Falls is early spring through October. Our expert staff has created a step-by-step process on how to plant a tree, as well as a helpful video with a few tree planting tips and tricks.

Tree Planting Tips

  1. Dig up the dead tree using a pointed spade, pop it out of the ground, and set it aside. Make sure the planting hole is 2-3 times wider than the container of the newly planted tree to allow for healthy root system development.

  2. If needed, add soil boosters such as compost or black dirt if the planting site contains a lot of clay to encourage root development.

  3. Pull the new tree out of the pot and loosen the feeder roots by hand or with a spade/utility blade to prevent circling tree roots.

  4. Set the tree in the hole, ensuring the root collar is above the soil level. Fill in with soil, remove air pockets, pack for stability, mulch, and water thoroughly. We recommend using a root stimulator to promote healthy growth. (We can help you select the right tree and the best root stimulator for it!)

  5. If you have issues with wildlife, we recommend either a granular deterrent (available at LGC) or a physical barrier. If you have high winds, stake the tree at two or three points depending on the size of the tree.

The experts at Landscape Garden Centers are here to help. Stop by and check out our tree selection, soil boosters, root stimulators, and more!

How to Plant Different Types of Trees

Most trees can be planted using our plant a tree how to guide, but some trees require additional steps depending on their growing method.

  • Ball & Burlap (B&B) trees have their roots balled up in soil wrapped in burlap material. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil to prevent root rot from excess moisture.

Landscape Garden Centers offers the best selection of B&B trees for sale in the Sioux Falls area.

  • Bare root trees come without a pot or soil, making them lightweight and easy to plant. Soak the root system in water for several hours before planting to hydrate them and encourage root development.

  • These trees are grown in a pot with potting soil. Before planting, loosen the feeder roots to help them spread into the surrounding soil and prevent girdling roots.

  • Shade trees grow quickly and provide cooling shade in just a few years. Choose a planting site with enough room for both above-ground canopy growth and underground root system expansion.
