A few weeks ago, Landscape Garden Centers’ experts showed you how to spot rabbit damage on your plants and trees. Join us as we talk about how to rescue your rabbit damaged plants (if possible). Now that you’ve identified the areas damaged by the rabbits, here’s what to do next.
If the majority of the plant still looks undamaged, but you have some areas to prune
back, take your pruner and cut the damaged branches off at an angle.Be sure to cut back to the next node on the branch to encourage new growth.
If the entire plant has been damaged, you can either wait to see how it comes back for
the next couple of seasons, or go ahead and cut back/remove all of the dead and see if
any new growth happens. If it is a woody plant, you may need a saw to cut the branches.
If there is no salvaging the plant that has been eaten, stop in and we can help you pick out a new plant
We will even install the new plant and remove the dead one as an additional service.

Learn How to Plant a Tree

If you’re looking to replace a tree due to weather or rabbit damage, Landscape Garden Centers is here to help walk you through the tree planting process. The best time to plant trees in Sioux Falls is early spring through October. Our expert staff has created a step-by-step process on how to plant a tree, as well as a helpful video with a few tips and tricks.
Step-by-Step tree planting
1. Dig up the dead tree using the pointed spade, pop out of the ground and set aside. Make sure the hole has been dug 2-3x wider than the container of the new tree.
2. If needed, add your soil boosters at this time such as compost or black dirt if the soil contains a lot of clay.
3. Pull the new tree out of the pot and loosen the roots by hand or with a spade/utility blade.
4. Set in the hole, making sure that the root flare is above the soil level. Fill in with soil, pack for stability, mulch, and water in. We recommend using a root stimulator as well to promote root growth. (We can help you select the right one!)
5. If you have issues with wildlife, we recommend either a granular (available at LGC) or physical deterrent. If you have high winds, stake the tree at two or three points depending on the size of the tree.
The experts at Landscape Garden Centers are here to help. Stop by and check out our tree selection, soil boosters, root stimulators, and more!
